Flooding hits homes, causes rail, road disruption

Floods hit properties, closed an M25 slip road and caused travel delays across the south east of England after a night of heavy rain. Flood warnings were issued for parts of East Sussex and Kent, with flooding expected until Friday morning.

At least 45 properties have flooded across Kent, the Home Counties, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, according to the Environment Agency.

Meanwhile, there have been train delays due to the "severe weather" affecting Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink services, Southern Railway said.

Cultural projects across the county are in with a chance of being awarded a share of £5 million as part of a government funding project looking to uplift local organisations. North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) was provisionally offered the funding through the government’s Levelling Up Fund as part of the Spring Budget.

Tory council criticises winter fuel payment cuts

Conservative councillors at a local authority have proposed a motion against the government's winter fuel payment cuts.

It was submitted by the leader of Tory-led West Northamptonshire Council, Adam Brown, and suggests as many as 64,000 pensioners could be affected by the cuts in the area.

The motion, which will be heard at a full council meeting on Thursday, said the cut may "push many... towards making dire financial choices this coming winter".

Primary teacher admits murdering boyfriend and burying him in garden

Primary school teacher Fiona Beal, 50, has pleaded guilty mid-trial at the Old Bailey to the murder of boyfriend Nicholas Billingham, 42, who she buried in their garden. Beal had previously admitted manslaughter after stabbing her partner to death “in cold blood” before burying his body in their garden.

More than 40 people rescued from Billing Aquadrome

A holiday park was evacuated for a third time this year because of flooding.

Forty three people were rescued from Billing Aquadrome, in Great Billing, by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service.

An overnight rest centre at Lings Forum Leisure Centre housed 52 people and 22 displaced dogs, the fire service said.

A flood alert, external was issued at the park on Tuesday after heavy rain caused water levels on the River Nene to rise over the course of the last 48 hours.

Rita Orr says 15-year-old Callum, who also has autism, often had physical outbursts in which he would injure himself.

Plans unveiled for new Northants glamping holiday by A43

Plans have been put forward to transform an agricultural field near the A43 in South Northants into a holiday site. The applicant is looking for permission to build five glamping yurts on the southern border of Northamptonshire, between Evenley and Croughton.

The land is currently used by Barleymow Farm as a site for alpaca grazing and livestock. The applicant, Carla Savage, is looking to diversify the land use by establishing a small glamping business.

New rain warning issued for areas hit by flooding

A fresh warning for heavy rain was issued after parts of the East of England were flooded earlier this week.

The Met Office made a yellow warning, external for Cambridgeshire, Central Bedfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire and Suffolk from 17:00 (BST) on Thursday to 10:00 on Friday.

Parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire were badly affected by flooding, with roads closed and some schools shut on Monday.

Seven marathons in a week was incredible experience

A runner who completed seven marathons in seven days said it was "one of the most incredible experiences".

Alex Trivino, from Bozeat, in Northamptonshire, wanted to raise funds after his father-in-law, Trevor Davies, was diagnosed with brain cancer in February 2021.

Covering about 184 miles, he started the challenge with a race in Llangollen, Denbighshire, and finished with his final race in Richmond, south-west London, seven days later.

International alert after 60 cases of mysterious Covid-like illness

Doctors are on high alert over a mystery flu-like illness similar to Covid that has left people critically ill in Argentina. International public health surveillance system, ProMed, issued an alert after 60 cases of the unknown sickness were reported in Buenos Aires.

The PromMed system first alerted the world to Covid in 2019. The new alert reads: "In the past 30 days, there appears to have been an increase in severe atypical pneumonia requiring critical care in Buenos Aires. The affected individuals are mostly young people without major risk factors."

Men living in certain parts of West Northamptonshire could live almost 15 years longer than others just 20 miles away, according to “shocking” figures in a council report. The local authority’s ‘Director of Public Health Annual Report 2023′, which addresses the current well-being needs of the public and health inequities, has revealed that, on average, people living in the most affluent areas of the county can expect to live eight or nine years longer than those in the most deprived areas.

Consultation starts on crematorium near school

A public consultation is getting underway on controversial plans for a new crematorium next to a secondary school.
The process starts with an exhibition on Wednesday close to the site of the Wantage Park development near Northampton.
West Northamptonshire Council said the facility was "much needed".
Some local people have expressed concern about the crematorium being so near a school.
The council says a new crematorium is desperately needed, and the proposed facility will be "state-of-the-art" and sustainable.

Police deny misconduct over filmed 'brutal' arrest

A police force says it has not identified any misconduct during an arrest of a student who claims he was repeatedly assaulted by an officer. Northamptonshire Police said the strikes used by the officer were "approved  and trained tactics" in response to the student's refusal to comply. Footage of the arrest filmed by a friend of the student appeared to show him being hit several times. The student's solicitor has rejected the results of the police investigation.

A number of new and improved bus services across North Northamptonshire will be phased in over the coming months, as the council has announced plans to create better connectivity across the county. The Department for Transport (DfT) has allocated North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) just over £2 million to fund phase three of its Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) in 2024/25.

Northampton lose injured Brough and Koiki

Northampton Town defenders Patrick Brough and Ali Koiki are facing lengthy spells on the sidelines because of injury.

Brough was sent on as a 70th-minute substitute in Saturday's League One game at Huddersfield Town but suffered a fractured leg.

Despite that, he stayed on the pitch and completed the game, which the Cobblers won 3-1.

Koiki has not played since going off during the 0-0 draw against Burton Albion on 31 August - when he was replaced by Brough - and boss Jon Brady said he would be out for "several months" with a muscle injury.
